Used my old FujiFilm today. Hated using it, so didn’t go to much effort for my photo. I thought blurry and uninspiring was a suitable theme for today.
movie night {117/365}

Nice glass of horrible wine (I hate wine…but it was there) and a good movie wrapped up my night. I watched Avatar for the first time if you were interested. Really enjoyed it!
This photo looked better in B&W from the get-go.
RAW processing (UFRAW) involved using the soft-film button and auto-exposure. In GIMP I did auto-levels, desaturated the image with the lightness selection and added a screen layer at 50% opacity.

My pictures for this day are stuck on my new phone, of which I don’t have a USB cord for….yet. Hopefully I’ll get them off soon!! Darn annoying.
I was using my camera phone on these days because I had dumbly formatted my camera memory card, losing a bunch of photos. Whilst waiting for my brilliant hubby to recover the images, and because I don’t have a back up memory card, I used my phone and old fujifilm for 3 days.

ANZAC day today. A day to honour those that had fallen in Gallipoli and other battles and wars. War is such tragedy.
Lest we forget!
My husband and I decided to cart the kids on a walk over the bluff nearby. It was a beautiful day and the girls had a ball. My photo is of a fence down the bottom of the hill in the picnic area. I overexposed the life out of the original shot – thank goodness for RAW.
My RAW processing through UFRaw involved the Shade WB setting and Auto-exposuree. The original image is a tad out of focus, so after using auto-levels in GIMP, I also did an Unsharp Mask filter to sharpen the edges a touch. My settings were Radius=5.0; Amount=1.0; Threshold=8. It worked brilliantly. I added a softlight layer at 50% opacity to increase contrast.
just a big thank you!

You may have noticed (or not), that I haven’t posted a photo for some days now….usually this is due to my laziness/busy-ness. But not this time. I stupidly formatted my camera memory card, erasing several days of photos I thought I’d downloaded. What a duffer!!
Thankfully my far-too-smart hubby came to the rescue. He’s a software engineer, and has on more than one occasion (three to be exact), saved my poor memory cards. He has found a wonderful little open-source piece of programming that will recover information stored on deleted or formatted files. He had to amend the script a touch to get the program to look for RAW files and not jpg’s. Clever. Thankfully he recovered EVERYTHING I lost. YAY!
He’s planning on putting his amendment and the original source-code on his website Insyte Solutions in the coming weeks. It’s not a GUI program (aka, there’s no window, it’s used from the command line) – so I guess only people familiar with scripting/command line will really get it. Very useful for those who do understand it though!!
The source-code itself is called SAVEIMG. It’s aimed at Unix/Linux users.
I will be back to post the previous weeks’ photos in the next day or so.
day 108-114
April 27, 2010 at 9:29 am (April)
A week zipped by in a flourish! While I managed to snap some photos, I was unable to process and upload them until now.
DAY108

Levers at the railway museum. Saturday Safari group challenge for the month.
DAY109

My remote trigger. Very useful!
DAY111

The girls playing outside.
DAY112

My daughter and her bestie holding hands – so sweet!
DAY113

Me – darn it! Wish I didn’t have to use it, but like a big dope, I didn’t take any other shots this day.
old squash {107/365}

WELL!! I put my name down to play a full weekend of squash…something I haven’t done since I was in my teens. I played 3 games, and was completely worn out at the end of the day, already starting to feel the stiffness and joint aches creeping in. I have to play tomorrow too….nuts!
So, squash was my inspiration today, and my grotty old squash shoes were the subject.
I used the auto-exposure button in UFRaw, and added a soft light layer in GIMP.

Uninspired day. Here’s the glow of car tail lights on the condensation from the air-conditioning in the car whilst waiting at a drive-through.
Found out something interesting in my UFRaw conversion today that I’ve never mentioned before. Nearly all of my photos have the digital linear button selected to clip the image highlights – there are several exceptions to this choice though. You have a choice of digital linear or soft film like. All in all, the button represents a choice to clip the highlights for positive EV.
Digital linear looks sharper and brighter, and usually has an obvious distinction of several steps between the transition from highlights to darks – it’s much harsher. Obviously soft film is softer…it makes a smoother transition between the contrasts.This all sounds very Greek I’m sure. I’ll research it a little more and post a blog about it in the future. What I can say though, is that for sunset/sunrise shots, soft film like works best for me, the transition from bright sun to darker sky is a LOT smoother and doesn’t have transition lines like the digital linear can sometimes produce.
EV stands for Exposure Value Compensation – the Digital Photography School has an article about it that’s worth reading. It’s something that can be set in-camera as well as adjusted (in RAW) in post-processing.
web of spider {105/365}

Found a spiderweb glinting merrily in the sunset light. So I snapped it. You can see the spider perched blurrily in the middle of the web.
No adjustments made in the RAW conversion from UFRaw to GIMP. In GIMP I added my favourite layer, a soft light layer. I think I love contrast, which is what soft light helps to add to an image. It is hands-down my favourite post-processing technique of late.
